If there’s one thing Instagram has kept a tight grip on, it’s the ability to upload photos to your account. Due to strict restrictions on the API, the only way you can upload photos to Instagram is using the iOS or Android apps.

Until now. Chrome users can take advantage of this little trick that lets you post without a mobile device. All you have to do is switch the browser from desktop to mobile mode.

Step 1

Open up Instagram in your browser and make sure you’re logged in. Go to View >Developer > Developer Tools. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift+ I on PC or Cmd + Alt + I on Mac.

Step 2

Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + M on PC or Cmd + Shift + M on Mac to switch to mobile view and press F5 or reload the page . You’re going to have to keep the Developer Tools open to continue to use the mobile interface. Closing it reverts to the desktop version.

You should now have access to the same interface you’re used to seeing on your phone. Click the camera icon to upload any photo from your computer.

Step 3

After you select your image, you can rotate it and select between the square format or the full width photo (if applicable) and you can rotate the image. This method, however, does not give you access to any of Instagram’s editing tools or filters.

But if you’re uploading the photo directly from your computer, chances are you’e already done some photo editing on your computer. Click the Next button and you can type in a caption, complete with all your favorite Instagram hashtags.

Final Thoughts

This method obviously won’t appeal to all. If Instagram filters are a part of your editing routine, you’re going to have to stick to the app, or opt for a scheduling service like Buffer that lets you upload the photo and type in a caption on your computer, but the actual posting (and access to filters) happens on your phone.

But if you tend to take photos with your camera, edit them on your computer, and then send them to your phone for uploading, this new method will be much easier. We’ve shown other ways to post on Instagram with your PC too.
